IITG at a glance
Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity and an autonomous institute for education and research in science, engineering and technology is located in Guwahati, in north east India. it was established in 1994 by an act of parliament and its academic programme commenced in 1995
presently IIT Guwahati has eleven departments covering all the major engineering and science disciplines, offering B. Tech., B. Des., M. Tech., Ph.D. and M.Sc. programmes. Within a short period of time, the institute has been able to build up the necessary infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments.

Campus

IITG's campus is built on a 285 hectares plot of land on the northern bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 kms. from the heart of the city. With the majestic Brahmaputra on one side, and with hills and vast open spaces over the rest of the area, the campus is considered as an ideal place for learning. it has facilities like the Academic Complex, Administrative building, Central Library and Computer Centre and the Student Activity Centre apart from faculty and staff residential buildings, a guest house and student hostels.
Students of IITG live in hostels located in the campus. All these hostels are spacious and single seater rooms. Here student can get all type of basic amenities like food mess, canteen, lounges, campus wide LAN with internet access etc. There are facilities for sports and recreation such as satellite TV, indoor games and a gymnasium. The hostels are named after various rivers and tributries of north-east India. Presently, the hostels are:

The Central Library of IITG currently has 72,000 volumes, including textbooks, reference books, conference proceedings, back volumes, standards, and non-book material such as CD-ROMs, audio tapes, video tapes and more.
A cultural festival called Alcheringa and Techniche, the technical festival of the institute is organized every year A sub-chapter of SPIC-MACAY Guwahati has also been started.

Students are selected for admission to the undergraduate programmes through Joint Entrance Examination for IITs (IIT-JEE).
Students are selected for admissions to MSc programmes through Joint Admission to MSc in IITs (IIT-JAM) examination.
