IIT
KANPUR
The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) is one of the seven Indian
Institutes of Technology which generates thousands of technical giant
every year.it was set up in 1960. now IIT Kanpur has grown into one of
the top technological institutes in India, primarily focused on research
in engineering and science, and the teaching of undergraduates.
Campus
it has well-equipped modern laboratories, state-of-the-art computer network,
and well stocked technical library. Teaching methods rely on direct personal
contact between the teachers and the students, and the use of traditional
and modern instructional techniques. Students live in a pleasant and intellectually
stimulating environment with people having similar goals and aspirations,
which is an exciting and unique experience.
the campus is spread over an area of 4.3 km². it has a number of
facilities, including the National Wind Tunnel Facility. Other large research
centres include the Advanced Centre for Material Science, a Bio-technology
centre, the Advanced Centre for Electronic Systems, and the Samtel Centre
for Display Technology, Centre for Mechatronics, Centre for Laser Technology,
Prabhu Goel Research Centre for Computer and Internet Security, Facility
for Ecological and Analytical Testing

The Computer-Centre (referred to by the campus residents as "C-C")
in IIT Kanpur has about 100-150 Linux terminals and more than 100 Windows-NT
terminals supported by PARAM 10000 super computer, and is continuously
available to the students for academic work and recreation. Disk storage
is also provided using a networked file server system. Internet access
is provided by the means of two proxy servers, one for students and another
for faculty members. In addition, it hosts about 50 SUN workstations that
are considered powerful workhorses for heavy computational tasks. It is
a major intellectual, social and cultural hub in the campus.it should
be note down that IIT Kanpur and BITS Pilani are among the first large
academic institutions in India to be extensively networked, with an institute-wide
LAN and Ethernet access to every student room in the residence halls.
Departments
The Institute is organised into 9 Engineering departments, along with
individual departments for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Humanities.
In addition it has 5 centres and 5 inter-disciplinary programmes. Most
of the Engineering departments offer B.Tech., M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees.
The inter-disciplinary programmes also offer M.Tech. and in some cases
Ph.D. also. The Science departments offer M.Sc. and Ph.D. while the Humanities
& Social Science department offers Ph.D. All departments, centres
and inter-disciplinary programmes have their own laboratory facilities.
SIDBI Innovation & Incubation Centre
IIT
Kanpur has set up the SIDBI Innovation and Incubation Centre in collaboration
with Small Industries development Bank of India (SIDBI) to foster innovation,
research, and entrepreneurial activities in technology-based areas. SIIC
provides a platform to Start-ups prospective entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs
to convert their innovative ideas into commercially viable products. Incubatee

Programmes offered
Under-Graduate
Programme
4-year B. Tech and 5-year Integrated M. Sc.The 4-year B. Tech. and 5-year
Integrated M. Sc. undergraduate programmes have two components. The first
component is the core programme common to all students and is carefully
planned to give the students a strong base of general education in Mathematics,
Physics, Chemistry, Engineering Sciences, Technical Arts, and Humanities
and Social Sciences. The second component of the undergraduate programme
includes professional courses and a project in the chosen branch of specialisation. The
course structure in the core curriculum provides for large lecture classes
with tutorial discussion hours and laboratory sessions in smaller goups.
The professional programme, while providing the flexibility of having
laboratory courses often independent of the lecture classes, culminates
in a project involving the application of modern analysis and design techniques.
Two-year
M. Sc. : A limited number of candidates are also admitted
to the two-year M. Sc. programme in the disciplines of Chemistry, Mathematics,
Statistics and Physics. These are open to those who have earned the B.
Sc. degree in the relevant discipline.
B.
Tech. : Aerospace Engineering, Biological Sciences and Bio-Engineering,
Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering,
Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Metallurgical
Engineering.
B.
Tech. - M. Tech. : (Dual Degreee): Aerospace Engineering, Chemical
Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical
Engineering, Mechanical Engineering.
Post-Graduate Programme
The goals of the Postgraduate Programmes at the Indian Institute of Technology
Kanpur comprise the following: “The development of the highest quality
of scientific and engineering manpower to cater to the needs of Industry,
R & D Organisations and Educational Institutions who shall have a
broad grasp of the fundamental principles of sciences and the scientific
method, deep understanding of their area of specialisation, innovative
ability to solve new problems, and the capacity to learn continually and
interact with multidisciplinary groups. Above all, they should have a
capacity for free and objective enquiry, courage and integrity, awareness
and sensitivity to the needs and aspirations of society.” With this
end in view, the programmes are designed to include submission of a thesis
through which a student may develop his concepts and intellectual skills. These
programmes with their courses and specialised research aim to prepare
students for their professions by enabling a perspective and breadth of
knowledge related to the principal divisions of their respective fields
of specialisation. A postgraduate student will typically be enrolled for
three or four courses each semester, until he/she attains the necessary
levels of competence before embarking on his research and thesis.
