IIT Roorkee at aglance

Indian Institute of Technology – Roorkee(IITR) is one of the premier institutes for higher technological education and in basic and applied research, is located in Roorkee, a township in uttarakhanda. It was established in 1847. Since its establishment, the Institute has played a important role in providing the technical manpower and know-how to the country and in pursuit of research. The Institute has contributed to all sectors of technological development. It has also been considered a trend-setter in the area of education and research in the field of science, technology, and engineering. On September 21, 2001, the Government of India issued an ordinance, declaring it as the nation's seventh Indian Institute of Technology. The Ordinance is now converted into an Act by the Parliament to make IIT, Roorkee as an "Institution of National Importance".

Campus

The campus is spread in an area of 360 acres the departments and hostels have very impressive architectures and there is hardly any repetition of design in the entire campus. IIT Roorkee also has a Saharanpur Campus of 25 acres which offers courses in Polymer Science and Paper TechnologyThe campus sees a technical fest of IIT Roorkee called "Cognizance" and cultural fest called "Thomso". “Watch Out" and "Kshitij" are the two inhouse magazines brought out by the students of IITR.. It also has a Student Affair Council (SAC), which is the apex students body dedicated to the service of students in the campus and acts as an interface between the administration and the students' community. There are various sections which have been constituted under the cultural society (CULSOC) which include music, dramatics, chreography section, program management (PM), audio section and light section. It also has an active SPICMACAY chapter which organizes various cultural programs and help to inculcate the spirit of Indian classical music and culture amongst the students, faculty, etc..

Programmes offered
Roorkee offers Bachelor's degree courses in 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and postgraduate degrees in 55 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Science, Architecture and Planning. In 2003 IIT Roorkee also started Dual Degree Programs (B.Tech+M.Tech). Presently these programs are offered in three Engineering disciplines. The Institute has facility for doctoral work in all departments and research centers.
IIT Roorkee is running a 2 year residential MBA program. The Department of Management Studies also offers PhD in various disciplines.
It also offers a MCA programme. the MCA is a 3 year fulltime degree course consisting of six semesters. It covers various aspects of computing, accounting, finance, programming, design and managing networks and databases.
The Ph.D. degree of IIT Roorkee is in recognition of high achievements, independent research and application of scientific knowledge to the solution of technical and scientific problems. Creative and productive enquiry is the basic concept underlying the research work. In order to overcome any deficiency in the breadth of fundamental training or proper foundation for advanced work, special preliminary or pre-doctoral courses are given by each department/centre

Admission procedure

Under graduate
Students take admission in undergraduate courses through an All-India Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted by all the seven IIT's along with IT-BHU and ISM-Dhanbad, at various centres across the country in which more than 1,50,000 candidates compete for around 4,500 seats.
From the year 2006, JEE pattern has undergone a change, instead of two level selection procedure there will be only one level of selection wherein just three separate papers of Chemistry,Physics,Mathematics of 2 hour duration each take place. Now the paper would be objective type in nature

Post graduate
Students take admission in graduate programs of study at IIT Roorkee go through a process of selection prior to their admissions. The process of selection is administered at All India level or at the Institute depending on the program of study.
GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering), The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is an All - India Examination conducted by the seven IITs and IISc Bangalore, on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

JAM (Joint Admission Test to M.Sc) for admission to M.Sc programmes at the IITs. From year 2005 admissions to MCA programme at IIT Roorkee are also made through JAM which were previously through AIMCET..

JMET (Joint Management Entrance Test) The Joint Management Entrance Test is an Examination conducted by the seven IITs and IISc Bangalore for admission to the Postgraduate Degree Programmes in Management in the respective Institutes. This Institute offer courses leading to two-year Master of Science degrees in a number of disciplines. In addition, post-graduate programmes leading to M.Tech., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees are also offered.
