National
Institute of Technology formerly known as Tripura Engineering College
is the only Degree Level Engineering College in Tripura set up with the
intention of providing technical education to the aspiring and eligible
candidates of the state and the region.
The College was established in 1965 with the three traditional branches
of Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. It was initially affiliated
to Calcutta University. After the establishment of Tripura University,
the college was affiliated to the Tripura University. This is approved
by AICTE. from the 1999-2000 academic session a new four-year degree level
course in Computer Science & Engineering has been started.
Very optimistic development programmes have recently been undertaken for
modernization and re-orientation of the laboratories, augmentation of
computer facilities, library modernization, introduction of continuing
education cell and establishment of national level research centre in
selected areas like Geotechnology and Information Technology. Recently
AICTE has granted permission to introduce three new degree level courses
in Electronics & Communication Engineering, Production Engineering
& Transportation Engineering in the college, which are likely to be
started from the session 2005-06.
The College has regional status in the sense that out of a total intake
of 160 in the four branches of study, 22 seats are reserved for the candidates
from nominees. Recently intake as Lateral Entry in the 3 rd semester courses
in all the four branches has been started from the session 2004-05 for
the candidates who have completed Diploma in either of the four disciplines.
The College has produced more than 3000 engineering graduates since its
inception. Most of the ex-students of the college are serving in highly
responsible positions in Government, semi-government and private organizations
in India and abroad.

The
College has all basic infrastructural facilities for conducting the undergraduate
courses satisfactorily. It has got adequate number of well qualified and
experienced faculty members and technical supporting staff. It has a well
stocked library, computer facilities, workshop and laboratories relevant
to the courses of study.

Hostel
The College has Boys’ hostel facility, which is being run exclusively
for the nominee students hailing from outside the state. Nominee students
interested for staying in the hostel have to fill up a prescribed form
for admission to the hostel and have to deposit the necessary fees as
decided by the concerned authority.
Banking and Post Office
The Tripura Gramin Bank has a branch operating from the College campus.
The campus also has a Sub-Post Office by the name ‘‘Tripura
Engineering College’’.
Health Care
A well equipped Medical Unit with a senior Medical Officer, Pharmacist
and other supporting staff is available in the campus for rendering medical
care to the students, staff and other inmates of the campus. In case of
emergency, arrangements are made for transporting the patients to the
Jirania Rural Hospital (Primary Health Centre) 4 k.m. away or to the state
hospital at Agartala.
Comunication
The College runs private bus services from Agartala to College campus
and back during working hours and in cases of emergency adequate number
of buses, jeeps and private vehicles are available on NH-44 for traveling
from Agartala. It is mandatory for all students to avail bus facility
from Agartala to College Campus, however on special grounds some relaxation
may be given to some students
Extra Curricular activities
The students actively participate in all co-curricular activities like
games and sports, debate, cultural-functions, essay competition, drama
competition, rallies on various themes, NSS programmes etc. being sponsored
by the state Government and other statutory bodies and by the college
authority. N.S.S or N.C.C. is a compulsory subject for all students.
Training and Placement
The College has a training and placement cell under Training and Placement
Officer with supporting staff for organizing Industrial training of the
students, study tour and apprenticeship training for the passed out students.
Industrial training after the end of 5 th Semester examination is compulsory
for students of all disciplines. The training and placement cell also
arranges campus interview for pre-final and final-year students. Students
are encouraged to participate in seminars, workshops and various academic
competitions sponsored by Indian Society for Technical Education, Institution
of Engineers and other institutions through the training and placement
cell.
