The
National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (formerly Regional Engineering
College, Durgapur), was established by an Act of Parliament in 1960 as
one of the eight such colleges aimed to function as a pace setter for
engineering education in the country and to foster national integration.It
is a fully-funded premier Technological Institution of the Government
of India and is administered by an autonomous Board of Governors.
The Institute is located about 160 KMs north-west of Kolkata on the Howrah-Delhi
Main Railway-Route and overlooking the National Highway No. 2(the great
Grand-Trunk Road). The Institute spreads over an area of 187 acres of
land. It is fully residential and co-educational. At present about 2200
boys and 400 girls reside in seven boys' hostels and two girls' hostels.
The annual undergraduate intake is about 550 students.
The Institute is a Deemed to be University which awards B.Tech., M.C.A.,M.B.A.,M.Tech.
and Ph.D. degrees to students after their successful completion of the
specified courses. The Institute imparts education in the disciplines
of Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering,
Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering,Information Technology
and Biotechnology. Following a procedure laid down by the Ministry of
Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India, National Institute
of Technology, Durgapur, selects candidates, on the basis of AIEEE rankings,for
its own admission and 18 other NITs who admit such students on the basis
of statewise quota. The Institute reserves two seats for admission of
physically handicapped candidates from W.B. in addition to its normal
intake. A number of seats are also reserved for Scheduled Caste/Tribes
candidates from WB and also from other states on statewise quota. Seats
are also reserved for the wards of personnel from military and paramilitary
forces who have been killed or permanently disabled during war or hostility.
Admission
- Under Graduate
Admission procedure for undergraduate courses
Eligibility: - For admission to any of the
National Institute of Technology, candidate needs to apply only to the
National Institute of Technology assigned to the state or Union Territory
in which the school or college from where he/she has passed the qualifying
examination, is located. He/she will be eligible for admission to NIT
Durgapur, subject to the following conditions:-
• He/she should not be more than 23 years old as on August 1st of
the same year (26 years for scheduled caste /tribe candidate, foreign
student, ward of India-based staff posted abroad).
• He should have passed the 10+2 Higher Secondary Examination
of West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education or its equivalent,
with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English.
• For candidate from West Bengal, he/she will have to qualify
in the AIEEE Examination
• For a candidate from a state or a union territory other than West
Bengal , he/she would have been selected by the National Institute of
Technology assigned for the state or union territory in accordance with
its admission procedure and criterion to National Institute of Technology
Durgapur.
Application: - Application
forms for the admission to NIT , Durgapur and other 16 NITs, located in
different parts of India, are distributed only among the candidates enlisted
in the merit list of AIEEE. Selection: - The NIT assigned to the state
or union territory will select candidates from other states or union territories
other than Andaman & Nicobar Islands on the basis of merit in accordance

Admission - Postgraduate courses
Eligibility: A. For Engineering Disciplines:
• B.E. or B.Tech. in Engg./Tecnology in respective branch of Engg
or AMIE(I), AMIIM, AMIIChE by examination having two year of professional
experience.
B. For Other Disciplines:
• Chemistry (Corrosion Science, & Technology): M.Sc. in Chemistry
(Pure/Applied), B.E. or B.Tech. in ChE.
• Mathematics( Operation Research in Industry/Business Management)[Self-finance
or Part-time evening]: B.E./B.Tech. in Engg./Technology, or M.Sc.( with
Mathematics at graduate level), AMIE, AMIM, AMIIChE with two years of
professional experience.
• Physics( Advanced Materials Science & Technology): B.E./B.Tech.
in Engg./Technology,in Metallurgical & Materials Engg.,Mechanical
Engg., Electronics & Communication Engg. or M.Sc.in Physics, Applied
Physics, Materials Science or Electronics.
• For full-time courses, candidates will have to qualify in GATE,
conducted by IITs. They shall have to appear for interview/viva-voce for
final selection. Unemployed Non-GATE candidates may be considered for
admission to the full-time courses subject to the availability of seats
but they will not be entitled to scholarship. Non-GATE candidates for
full-time courses will be selected through college admission test (written/interview).
• Candidates working in industries and business organisations
around Durgapur (within the radius of 20 KMs from the college) fulfilling
the above qualifications may also apply for part-time courses. No-objection
certificate from their employer will be essential for admission.

form is available from the Office of the Dean(PG Studies & Research),
on payment of cash at the Institute cash counter or by post. The data
and time of distribution and receipt of forms is intimated through advertisements
in newspaper.
