National Institute of Technology Jalandhar was established in the year 1987 as Regional Engineering College and was given the status of National Institute of Technology (Deemed to be University) by the Government of India under the control of Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi on October 17, 2002.

As National Institute of Technology, the institute has a responsibility of providing high quality education in Engineering and Technology to produce competent technical manpower for the country. The institute offers B Tech program in nine disciplines of Engineering and Technology along with research programs leading to M.Sc, M Tech and Ph D. The institute acquires a national character having 50% student intake from the State of Punjab and the rest from other states/union territories of the country.

NIT Jalandhar is an autonomous institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, New Delhi. The institution functions under the over all control and guidance of the Board of Governers, the Director being the executive head of the institute. Besides the Board of Governers, the other authorities of the institute are the Senate, the Finance Committee and the Building and Works Committee.

Academics

Under Graduate Programmes
The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jalandhar offers admission into B.Tech. programmes through its different engineering departments. The duration of these programmes is 4 years. The programmes are offered to school leavers who have completed 12 years of schooling in science streams, basically Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.


Post Graduate Programmes
The Institute offers post graduates programmes at M.Tech, M.Sc., MBA

(I) Master of Technology (M.Tech.)

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jalandhar offers 2 years M.Tech. programme to engineering graduates and science post graduates. The programme is offered through all the engineering departments of the institute.

(II) Master of Science (M.Sc.)

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jalandhar offers Master of Science (M.Sc.) programme through its different departments.

(III) Master of Business Administration (MBA)

To fulfill the growing demand of techno managers of the various industry sectors, the National Institute of Technology Jalandhar offers courses in business administration, economics and communication through its MBA programme.

Doctoral Programme
The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jalandhar offers Doctoral Programme leading to award of PhD. The programme is offered through all the departments of the institute.

Centre of Training and Placement

Centre of Training and Placement (CTP) of National Institute of Technology (erstwhile Regional Engineering College), Jalandhar started functioning in the year 1990.

The Centre is involved in three specific areas:-
-Placement of outgoing Graduates
-Industrial Practical Training of students during the four-year B.Tech. Programme.
-Industry Institute Partnership activities

The overall annual placement level achieved during the last few years has been 60% to 90% ( for some disciplines, it being 100%).

During the last few years, three projects have been sanctioned & completed by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, and All India Council of Technical Education.

The CTP has been instrumental in signing MOUs with Confederation of Indian Industry, AMDOCS Cyprus and Jayshree Textiles, Calcutta
