The history of National Institute of Technology, Patna dates back to 1886.It was in this year that the institute took birth as a Survey Training School.In year 1900, the school was elevated to Bihar School of Engineering, Patna.The school was entrusted with the responsibility of producing high quality engineering graduates in the state.After 24 years, the government again renamed the school as Bihar College of Engineering, Patna.Further, the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) of Government of India renamed this institute as National Institute of Technology, Patna (NIT, Patna) on January 28, 2004.

Since its inception, the institute has churned out highly skilled engineering and technology graduates.Today, the institute is acknowledged a centre of excellence for imparting training, research and development in the areas of basic and applied sciences.

At present, the NIT Patna is affiliated to Patna University.The institute would soon be assigned the 'Deemed University' status by the government.The 'Deemed University' status would give adequate powers to the institute to frame its own policies as regards to conduct of study programmes, examinations and award of degrees.

College Environment

The college has a long history of academic excellence but lost its way somewhat in the middle due to regional politics and irregular academic sessions at Patna University.However with the upgradation to NIT status and a steady flow of funds, the institute is definitely looking forward to overcoming these problems & lots of significant steps have been taken, regularization of academic sessions being one such example.New departments have been added like Computer Science & Engineering and the institute looks set for bigger achievements.

Computer Science Engineering

The institute has recently added the departments of Computer Science and Engineering and Information Technology.The establishment of these two departments was a key contributing factor towards being accorded NIT status.Besides it is also expected that addition of these two departments will also have positive spin off effects on other departments and promote interdisciplinary research and give a big thrust to placements .

Academics

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Patna, offers number of study programmes at both under graduate and post graduate level. Besides offering academic programme the institute faculties also conducts Research Programmes and offers consultancy services to both government and public sector undertakings.
